If you’re planning a trip to Clearwater Beach and thinking about getting out on the water — first of all, great choice. The Gulf is stunning, and a boat trip is genuinely one of the best things you can do here.
But here’s the question we get asked all the time: “Should we do a private charter or just join one of the big group tours?”
It’s a fair question, and honestly, the answer depends on your group. We’ve been running private charters here for years, so we have a front-row seat to what makes people happy on the water — and what doesn’t. Let us break it down for you like a neighbor would.
What’s the Difference, Really?
A group tour puts you on a larger boat — sometimes with 20, 30, or even 50 other people — on a set route, at a set time, for a set duration. You show up, hop on, and go along for the ride.
A private charter is the whole boat, just for your group. You pick the time, influence the route, set the pace, and share the experience only with the people you came with. Your captain — in our case, that’s me, Captain Sharon — is focused entirely on making your trip great.
Same water. Very different experience.
When a Group Tour Makes Sense

We’ll be honest with you — group tours aren’t a bad option for everyone. If you’re a solo traveler who wants to meet people, or you genuinely just want a quick hour on the water without much thought, a group tour can work just fine.
They’re also typically cheaper upfront, which matters if budget is the top priority.
When a Private Charter Is the Better Call

Here’s where we see private charters pull way ahead — and it’s most situations, especially for families, couples, and friend groups.
You have 3–6 people. This is the sweet spot. When you split a private charter across four, five, or six people, the per-person cost is often comparable to a group tour ticket — but the experience is incomparably better. You’re not sharing the boat with strangers. You’re not waiting for 40 people to find their seats before you can leave the dock.
You have kids. Kids need flexibility. They get excited about dolphins and want to linger. They find a shell and want to stay on the sandbar a little longer. On a group tour, the schedule doesn’t bend. On a private charter, we bend.
You want to actually see dolphins — not just hope for them. We know these waters. We know the times of day, the spots, and the patterns. We’re not rushing through a fixed route — we go where the dolphins are.
You’re celebrating something. Anniversary, birthday, bachelorette, proposal — these moments deserve more than sharing a bench with strangers. Several of our guests have told us their private charter was the highlight of their entire vacation. That matters to us deeply.
You have specific requests. Want to spend extra time at Caladesi Island? Want to go shelling at a sandbar the ferry crowds haven’t found yet? Want to watch the sunset from the water? On a group tour, you get what’s on the schedule. On a private charter, we make it yours.
A Real Example

We recently took out a family of five. They had done a group dolphin tour the year before and said it felt rushed and crowded. This time, we anchored near a sandbar where they collected shells for nearly an hour. We spotted a pod of dolphins on the way back and stayed with them for 10 minutes while they played and hunted for fish.
That’s not something that happens on a 45-person boat on a 90-minute loop.
So, Which Should You Choose?
If you’re visiting Clearwater with family or friends and you want a real, personal, memorable experience on the water — a private charter is the right call. It’s not the most expensive option when you do the math per person, and the difference in what you get is enormous.
If you’re truly on your own or on a very tight budget with no flexibility, a group tour will still get you on the water.
But if you can swing it? Come out with us. We’ll make it a trip you talk about long after you’ve gone home.
